So, welcome to my blog and for those of you who don't know, my debut novel, The Rock Star's Girls was released on 10 June. The last few days have been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster and I have to say I was a bit unprepared for how I would feel about this. I was under no illusions about my story and release day came and went, fairly quietly until I became ever so slightly addicted to Amazon rankings and furtively followed them through the first few days. Today, I stumbled across a pirated version of the book, which uncovered another valuable lesson in my fast-developing experience as an author. However, my publisher acted very quickly and has it all in hand. I have changed my profile picture to me dressed as a pirate at a fancy dress party a few years ago, as a nod to piracy :o) The book seems to be doing okay, but no-one had posted a review and for me, that would be the acid test - will someone like it enough or dislike it enough to post their thoughts? They did... and it was the latter. Juvenile, suited to a fifth grader, does not flow, were some of the words used by the reviewer and she at least gave me a 1 star, which in my book is better than none :o) I was chatting with a fellow author earlier and we touched on the events today and I quoted a favourite saying, which is actually from the Serenity Prayer. Those of you who know me, know I am not a religious person but the first verse really resonates with me: "Give me grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, Courage to change the things which should be changed, And the Wisdom to distinguish the one from the other." Life is a rollercoaster and throws us small, medium and large challenges from time to time. If I'm going to continue as an author, I will learn to overcome these challenges. I can either deal with each in a positive manner or let it bother me. As an individual, I choose how to react to situations, whether it's a customer at work, my partner or someone driving their car in a thoughtless manner. I can decide whether or not I let someone's bad mood affect me. I can pick how I take a reader's review - personally, as an attack on my abilities as a writer or take the view that everyone has an opinion and if they choose to express it, that is up to them. At least my reviewer felt strongly enough one way or another to take the time to share her thoughts - and that's how I'll end it. Take care and tomorrow is a new day, Tx
